Big houses, a railway estate and a protected common
Chorleywood grew with the Metropolitan Railway. The line was built in the late 1880s, and in 1894 James Beckley bought the land that became the Station Estate and sold plots to local builders, with C F A Voysey advising their architects. Of its 203 houses, the council’s appraisal counts 80 percent as Victorian or Edwardian.

Affinity Water supplies the area. Its 2025 report for zone AF045, Rickmansworth and Gerrards Cross, gives about 283 mg/l as calcium carbonate, from a single sample taken that year. Watergrade, a third-party site, places Chorleywood in that zone and says this does not confirm the supply at every address. Water at that level leaves scale in combis, cylinders and shower valves, so protection is part of every boiler and bathroom we quote here.
Four conservation areas, and Heronsgate next door
Chorleywood Common, the Station Estate, Loudwater Estate and Outer Loudwater sit inside the parish, with Heronsgate on its southern boundary. Two carry Article 4 directions.
Chorleywood Common
Designated in 1976. Its Article 4 direction brings changes to windows, chimneys, front boundaries and hardstanding under planning control, and the Common is treated as if it were inside the Chilterns National Landscape.
The Station Estate

Not every house here is on mains gas
Around four in five homes in the two Chorleywood wards heated with mains gas alone in 2021. About 107 ran on oil only and 38 on LPG only, though the wards also take in Sarratt and Maple Cross.
