Four rivers, a flood plain, and what that does to Hertford drainage
Hertford exists because of a ford across the Lea, and the Rib, the Beane and the Mimram all join the Lea inside the town. The valley floor is a broad flood plain flanked by sometimes steep hills, and the river runs through it in several channels because of centuries of weirs, mills and navigation works. The Environment Agency maintains a flood alert area covering the River Lee through Hertford and Ware.

Groundwater gets into drains, not just out of them. On the valley floor the water table sits high, so a cracked clay drain does not only leak sewage out, it lets groundwater in. That fills the pipe with clean water it was never sized to carry, and the system then runs at capacity in wet weather and backs up at the first heavy rain. It is the most under diagnosed fault in the town and it only shows on camera.
Outfalls surcharge when the rivers are up. Surface water systems that discharge towards a watercourse cannot discharge freely when the receiving water is high. On the alluvium near the rivers, with a high water table, the same soakaway fills from below and does nothing. Anyone quoting one here without a percolation test is guessing.
The medieval core sits low and tight. Around Mill Bridge and The Wash, close to the river channels, the town keeps its medieval layout. Shallow gradients, buildings hard up against the road, drainage that has been altered repeatedly over centuries, and very little room to work. These runs need a camera and patience rather than a rod and optimism.
Who is actually responsible for your drain
Two things decide who pays: the company, and the line on the ground.
The company is settled here. Thames Water is the sewerage undertaker for Hertford and treats the town’s foul water at Rye Meads on Rye Road at Ware, a couple of miles downstream on the Lea. Anglian Water does not serve Hertfordshire, whatever some listings sites tell you, and your wastewater bill will bear that out.
The line moved in 2011. Since then the lateral, meaning the length of your drain that carries on past your boundary, and the former private sewers serving more than one house, have been the undertaker’s. Everything inside the boundary that serves your house alone is still yours, and so is the surface water side: a soakaway or a driveway drain on your own land was never part of the transfer and never will be.

A blockage in a shared run serving several houses, or in a lateral past the boundary, sits in the public sewer, and resolving that is the undertaker’s responsibility rather than yours. Surface water and soakaways. Driveway and patio drainage, channel drains, and soakaways sized and sited for the ground they are going into.
Why Hertford drains block
Fat and grease. Poured down a sink, cooled in a cold pipe, and built up over years into a solid lining. The old shallow gradient runs in the town centre are the worst affected because the flow is slow to begin with.
Wipes. Nothing that says flushable is flushable. Wipes do not break down, they catch on any small defect in the pipe, and then everything else catches on them.
Root ingress. Roots find joints in old clay pipework and grow into the moisture. Hertford is a green town with a lot of mature trees on the older streets, and this is one of the most common causes of repeat blockages we deal with.
Collapsed and displaced clay pipework. Victorian and Edwardian salt glazed clay drains were laid in short lengths with rigid joints. Ground movement, tree roots and a century and a half of loading eventually open the joints or crack the barrel.
Silt and gravel. Through made ground or gravel, fine material washes in at defects and settles in the invert, building slowly until the drain blocks for no obvious reason.
Wrong connections. Foul into surface water or the other way round. Common where extensions and conversions have been added over the years without anybody checking where the new pipe was going.
The properties where the job gets more interesting
Folly Island, on the north east side of town. Water on more than one side, older fabric, tight lanes and no room to bring equipment in. Groundwater is high and the runs are old, so drainage here gets surveyed rather than assumed, and we plan where the jetting unit stands before we arrive.
Hornsmill Road, Bullocks Lane and West Street, down towards County Hall and the railway. The south west quadrant of the conservation area, with older housing, mature trees and plenty of clay still in service. Where a rear extension has gone over or alongside the original run we find a buried manhole, a bend added to get round a new wall, and a blockage that returns to the same point every eighteen months. A camera finds it in an hour. Rodding finds it again in eighteen months.
The town centre and the regeneration sites at Bircherley Green and the former Emmaus Superstore site. Mixed use drainage in the historic core, with restricted access and hours and shared runs serving several units. Grease dominates wherever there is food use, and scheduled jetting beats an emergency callout on a Saturday.
Foxholes and the eastern estates. Modern drainage, usually plastic, generally in good order, and typically laid on made ground over the old quarry workings. Blockages here are almost always usage related rather than structural, and where surface water needs dealing with, the gravel underneath makes a soakaway a genuinely good option.
Hertingfordbury, Bramfield, Bayford and the outlying villages. Once you are away from the town, some properties are on private drainage rather than the public sewer, with septic tanks or treatment plants. Who do I call first, you or Thames Water?
