BLOCKED DRAINS IN RICKMANSWORTH
Rickmansworth grew where three rivers meet, and much of it sits low. The council’s 2026 Strategic Flood Risk Assessment names the Colne valley through Rickmansworth and Batchworth as the district’s most extensive area of river flood risk, and Rickmansworth among the settlements at highest risk of groundwater flooding. It also counts 30 sewer flooding incidents in WD3 between 2015 and 2025.
So when a drain backs up here, the first question is where the water is coming from: a blockage in your own pipe, a public sewer that is full, or rain and groundwater the drains were never built to carry. We work that out first, then clear it with whatever it needs, from a plunger to the jetter, and put a camera down it if it looks likely to block again.
Outside gullies and manholes standing full
Toilets that fill and will not empty, or gurgle when another fitting drains
Kitchen wastes set solid with fat
Showers, baths and basins slowed by hair and soap, which hard water turns into a crust
Soil stacks in flats and terraces, where one blockage affects several homes
Root ingress and displaced joints in old clay runs
Find it
We lift the covers and see which chambers are full and which are clear. That tells us where the blockage sits before any tool goes in.
Clear it
Plunger, snake or rods where they will do the job. The jetter where it is needed, at a pressure that suits the pipe, because old clay jetted like new plastic can turn a blockage into a collapse.
Look inside
A drain that blocks twice a year has a reason. Once it runs, a camera shows whether the pipe itself is cracked, displaced or full of roots.
When it only happens in heavy rain
The 2026 assessment records 19 properties flooded from surface water at Harefield Road and Juniper Dell in 2014, groundwater flooding at Church Street, Batchworth in 2004, and surface water with high groundwater at the Aquadrome underpass in 2024. If your gully overflows only in a downpour, the cause may be a silted gully, a patio with no fall, a soakaway in saturated ground, or a full sewer. Jetting your drain fixes none of those, so we look before we quote.
Whose pipe is it?
Since October 2011, most shared drains and lateral drains beyond a property boundary belong to the sewerage company. The drain inside your boundary that serves only your home is yours. We tell you which side of that line the blockage is on, and if it is the sewerage company’s, we say so rather than charge you to clear it.

Period drains in the town centre
The conservation area spans buildings from the fifteenth to the twentieth century and takes in the Victorian development of the town. Drains of that age are often clay, laid in short lengths, and the joints are where roots get in and sections drop. A camera tells you whether a repeat blockage is the pipe itself.
Moor Park and Loudwater
On the Moor Park estate, builders’ vehicles are expected to park within the property, and no skips or materials may go on the company’s roads or verges. Its conditions for development works allow 8.00am to 5.30pm on weekdays and 9.00am to 1.00pm on Saturdays, with nothing on Sundays or bank holidays, so a dig or relining job is planned inside those hours. Loudwater’s roads are owned by the estate, not the council.
A camera survey gives you a recording and a written report rather than an opinion. It is worth having after a repeat blockage, before you buy, when an insurer wants the drain proved, and before an extension goes over or near a run. CCTV drain surveys start from £180.
Cracked or displaced sections can often be lined from the existing chambers, with no trench across the drive. A collapsed pipe, or one that has lost its fall, has to be dug and replaced. Where work changes a drain under or near an extension, building control is involved, which in Three Rivers is Hertfordshire Building Control. Rickmansworth’s groundwater risk is one more reason we line rather than dig wherever the pipe allows.

We would not. It shifts a soft blockage a short way at best, does nothing to set fat or roots, and makes the pipe unpleasant for whoever opens it next.
Often because something other than a blockage is going on: a silted gully, a patio laid without a fall, a soakaway in saturated ground, or a public sewer that is full. Parts of Rickmansworth carry river, surface water and groundwater flood risk, so we check which it is before jetting anything.

Yes, and on an older house it is money well spent. A collapsed drain found after exchange is yours to pay for.
Yes. Tell us where the van can park on your drive, since the estate roads are mostly private and barrier controlled. Larger planned work there follows the estate company’s hours and its rule of no skips or materials on its roads or verges.
