We build with a modular crate system, wrapped correctly in geotextile so the surrounding material cannot migrate into the void, sized against a percolation test rather than guessed, and kept the required distance from the building. Silt is the other killer, so a driveway soakaway gets a silt trap ahead of it, because fine grit off a drive will blind a geotextile faster than anything else.
Three, and this is the one that costs people real money: a leaking drain here does not show itself. On clay, a cracked or open jointed drain leaks and the water sits, so you get a sunken patch, a boggy area or a smell. On free draining ground the escaping water drains straight away and there is no surface evidence at all. Worse, that continuously moving water carries the fine material out of the bedding and the surround with it.
