A river town in a wide valley, and why that matters underground
St Ives is here because the Great Ouse was fordable at this point, wide and shallow with a gravel bottom, and the town has lived with that river ever since. It flooded seriously in 1947, at Easter 1998 and again in January 2003, and in 2006 to 2007 a defence scheme costing nearly nine million pounds put 500 metres of brick clad steel piling along the town frontage, most visibly at The Waits, with another 750 metres across the water protecting Hemingford Grey. That work cut the annual flood risk from ten percent to one percent, but it did not change the ground the drains sit in.
For drainage work, three things follow from all of that.
Low lying ground near the river means surcharging, not just flooding. When the Ouse runs high, surface water systems that fall towards it cannot discharge freely. Gullies and yard drains at the low end of town, around The Waits, The Quay, Bridge Street and the London Road side, are the first places standing water appears in a wet spell. A drain down there that seems fine all summer and struggles every winter is usually not blocked at all. It is trying to empty into a system that is already full.
Gravel and river alluvium behave differently from clay. The valley bed here is gravel, and excavations near the river tend to bring water ingress and running ground rather than the shrinkable clay cracking we deal with further south in Hertfordshire. That changes how we approach a dig. Where a repair near the river genuinely needs excavation, shoring and pumping get planned before the first spade goes in, which is one more reason we prefer to repair from inside the pipe wherever the camera shows it is possible.
A high water table works both ways on a defective pipe. A cracked drain on low ground does not only let foul water out. It lets groundwater in, filling the run with clean water it was never sized for. The system then runs near capacity whenever the ground is wet and backs up at the first proper rain. It only ever shows up properly on a CCTV survey.
Old core, big modern ring
St Ives is a medieval market town with a tight historic centre and a much larger twentieth century ring around it. The population went from around three thousand in 1911 to over twelve thousand by 1981, so the bulk of the housing is post war estate stock, with the older fabric concentrated around Market Hill, Bridge Street, The Broadway, Church Street and Broad Street.
The drainage follows the same split. In the older streets we expect salt glazed clay laid in short lengths with rigid joints, open joints from a century of ground movement and loading, root ingress from mature trees, and cast iron soil stacks on rear elevations. Runs in the historic core have been altered repeatedly over the centuries, gradients are shallow, and access is tight. The town centre sits in the St Ives Conservation Area, designated in 1978, and the fifteenth century bridge with its chapel is Grade I listed, so any external pipework alteration on the older buildings needs heritage thinking as well as drainage thinking. Huntingdonshire District Council is the planning authority. Access is the practical half of it: the bridge is twelve feet six inches between the parapets, and The Quay and Bridge Street leave little room to position a jetting unit, so we plan where the van stands before we set off.
Out in the estate ring, along Ramsey Road, Somersham Road, Needingworth Road, Westwood Road and Houghton Road, the picture changes. Post war and later drainage is mostly plastic and generally sound, laid with shared runs and inspection chambers through back gardens. Blockages out here are usually about what has gone down the pipe rather than the pipe itself, which is better news, because usage problems clear and stay clear once the habit changes.
Whose drain is it, yours or Anglian Water's
St Ives is on Anglian Water for both water supply and sewerage, which is worth saying plainly because most of our patch further south is served by different companies. If you have moved up from Hertfordshire, the company you ring about a public sewer problem has changed.
Back in 2011 the boundary shifted, when private sewers and lateral drains passed over to the sewerage undertakers. Since then, the shared runs serving more than one property, and the lateral, meaning the length of your drain beyond your property boundary, have been Anglian Water’s responsibility. The drain within your boundary that serves only your own house remains yours, and so does surface water drainage on your own land, such as a soakaway or a driveway channel, which was never part of the transfer.
What that means in practice: a blockage between your kitchen gully and the boundary is your responsibility to sort. A blockage in a shared run behind a terrace of houses, or out past the boundary, sits in the public sewer, and resolving it is the undertaker’s responsibility rather than yours. Surface water drainage. Channel drains, patio and driveway runoff, and soakaways where the ground suits them. On free draining gravel a soakaway can work well. On low ground near the river, with a high water table, it can fill from below and do nothing, so we test before we recommend one.
Why St Ives drains block
Fat and grease. Cooled in the pipe and built up in layers, worst on shallow gradient runs in the old core where the flow was slow to begin with.
Wipes. Nothing marked flushable actually is. Wipes snag on the first rough joint and everything else builds behind them.
Roots. Mature trees in the older streets find the open joints in clay pipework and grow into the moisture. This is the most common cause of the drain that blocks in the same spot every year or two.
Displaced and cracked clay. Short rigid lengths, a century or more of loading, and ground that moves. Eventually a joint opens or a barrel cracks, and silt, roots and groundwater all follow.
High river levels. Not a blockage at all, but it looks like one. Low lying gullies surcharging in wet weather need a different answer from a rod.
Wrong connections. Foul into surface water, or the reverse, usually where an extension was added years ago without anyone checking where the new pipe went. The camera finds it.
