One thing to get straight, because it decides which van goes where: this is Welwyn village, covered by AL6 9 and AL6 0, the first taking in Ayot St Lawrence, Rabley Heath and Ayot St Peter and the second Tewin and Digswell. Two things follow. First, there is a great deal of engineered structure below ground here and not all of it is modern. Welwyn has lived alongside the Great North Road for centuries and has had a bypass since 1927, claimed as the first in Britain and later absorbed into the A1(M). Below the motorway at Junction 6 sits the Roman bath house from Dicket Mead, preserved in a steel vault nine metres down. The ground here has been dug, culverted and built through repeatedly, and assuming what runs where is a poor substitute for a camera.
Second, there is real fall across the site. The Digswell Viaduct has carried the railway over the Mimram valley on around forty brick arches, reaching around thirty metres above ground, since 1850. On sloping ground drains flow fast where the gradient is steep and then silt up where it flattens out at the bottom, which is why blockages so often occur at the same point on a run year after year rather than randomly.

A blockage in a shared run, or past the boundary, sits in the public sewer, and resolving that is the undertaker’s responsibility rather than yours.
