Emergency Plumber in Arlesey

Tonight, or a weekday morning

If the water can be stopped, a weekday visit costs less, because from 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday there is no call-out fee.

Ring tonight: water still running with the stopcock shut

Ring tonight: water reaching sockets, lights or the consumer unit

Ring tonight: a ceiling bulging or dripping through a light fitting

Ring tonight: dirty water rising into a shower tray, bath or sink

Can wait: a cistern running on into the pan or out of the overflow

Can wait: a drip under a sink that an isolation valve has stopped

No water at all sits in between: if the neighbours are dry too, it is a supply fault for the water company, and if only your house is dry, call us.

Get a fixed price before we start

Call and talk to an engineer, or send us the details and we will come back to you with a price.

The first five minutes

Close the stopcock

Turn it clockwise until it stops, by hand only, as an old valve can shear under a wrench. If it will not budge, try the outside stop tap at the boundary.

Keep water and electrics apart

If water has reached wiring, switch off at the consumer unit from somewhere dry. If you cannot, keep everyone out of that room.

Empty the pipes

Open the ground floor cold taps to drain what is left in the system, and lift rugs, electronics and paperwork clear of the water.

Where Arlesey stopcocks tend to be

The newer estates

At Arlesey Gate off Stotfold Road and at Samuel Gardens, look in the kitchen units or utility room, with an outside stop tap in a boundary box at the front.

Fairfield

Fairfield grew out of the Three Counties Asylum, later Fairfield Hospital, which closed in 1999 and became housing. In a converted building, find your own valve now and ask where any shared ones are.

Church End and the High Street

Near the 12th century St Peter’s Church, where old farmhouses and cottages are listed, try cellars and under floors. In older High Street houses, start under the kitchen sink.

What we come out for

Burst and split pipes, including in lofts

Leaking hot water cylinders and their valves

Cisterns overflowing through a wall pipe

Blocked toilets and drains backing up

Failed central heating and shower pumps

Loss of water to part of the house

Appliance hoses and valves that have let go

In newer homes, a push-fit joint never pushed fully home can hold for a couple of years and then let go, and water under a floor can surface well away from the fault.

Clay ground and buried supply pipes

Arlesey sits on Gault clay, which fed five brickworks by 1900 and made the pale Arlesey White bricks until 1992. Clay holds water rather than draining it, so a leak on a buried supply pipe tends to show as a soft, wet patch in a lawn or drive.

The pipe from your boundary into the house is yours. With around 2,000 new homes planned between the town, the A507 and Fairfield, know where yours runs before anyone digs nearby.

Who supplies your water

It depends on the street. A July 2026 notice from mua Water placed the Arlesey Gate homes, SG15 6BE to 6BN, in the Anglian Water region with mua as their supplier. We have not been able to confirm who supplies the older parts of town, so check the name on your bill.

A burst in the street, or several houses losing water at once, is for that supplier. Anything from your boundary inwards is for you, or us, to put right.

What happens when you ring

A person answers whatever the hour and asks what is leaking, whether it has stopped, whether water has reached a ceiling or electrics, and where in Arlesey you are.

Before an engineer sets off, you are told what the visit will cost. You then decide whether we come tonight or on a weekday.

Out of hours charges in SG15

On weekdays from 8am to 5pm there is no call-out fee. Plumbing is £140 + VAT (£168 including VAT) for the first hour, which is the minimum charge, then £60 + VAT for every half hour after that.

Evenings, nights and weekends add a £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT) call-out to each attendance, on top of the hourly rate, and the out of hours plumbing rate is £198 + VAT for the first hour on weekday evenings until 8pm and weekends from 8am to 8pm, or £250 + VAT overnight from 8pm to 8am. Half the first hour is paid up front. If the job proves different from what was described, the engineer stops and prices it before going on. Our pricing page sets it out.

Gas, hidden leaks and the day after

A smell of gas

Get everyone out, leave switches alone, and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 before us. Our Gas Safe engineers (956889) repair the cause once it is made safe.

A leak you cannot see

When water is appearing but the source is not obvious, we trace it before lifting anything, so boards or tiles come up only where the fault actually is.

Afterwards

You get a written note of what we found and did, which is what an insurer will want. Making good can be priced once things dry out, and our labour carries a 12 month guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

Your water supplier, whose name is on your bill. At Arlesey Gate that is mua Water. Leaks on your side of the boundary are for you or us to fix.

Often a push-fit joint that was never fully seated. It can hold for a year or two and then let go.

Usually, if you go gently. If it resists, stop and use the main stopcock rather than risk snapping the valve.

Switch off at the consumer unit only from a dry spot. If you cannot, stay out of the room and tell us when you call.

On reactive call-outs we take half of the first hour up front. Nothing beyond that hour is done without you knowing the price.
