HERTFORDSHIRE, BEDFORDSHIRE & CAMBRIDGESHIRE
Berkhamsted runs from a medieval High Street in the valley to houses high on the slopes, and pipes fail differently in each. What to do first, and what a night call costs.

Before ringing anyone at midnight, close the stopcock and watch for a minute. If nothing is still getting wetter, the repair will be exactly the same job on a weekday morning, and between 8am and 5pm Monday to Friday there is no call-out fee to pay.
Some things cannot wait: water still running with the stopcock shut, water near a light fitting or the consumer unit, a bulging ceiling, or no supply at all where someone elderly, ill or very young lives.
A dripping tap, an overflow dribbling onto the patio or a leak that stopped at a valve can wait. Unsure? Ring 01462 506 374 and a person will give you a straight view.
Get a fixed price before we start
Call and talk to an engineer, or send us the details and we will come back to you with a price.
Shut the main stopcock by turning it clockwise until it stops
Close the nearest isolation valve if only one tap, toilet or appliance is leaking, so the rest of the house keeps water
Keep clear of wet electrics and only switch off at the consumer unit from dry floor
Open the cold taps downstairs to drain what is left in the pipes above
Turn off the boiler or immersion if the water escaping is hot
Then move what you can and take photos for your insurer. If the stopcock is seized, stop pushing and tell us; a snapped spindle turns a leak into a flood.
The High Street has buildings from the thirteenth century onwards, including the jettied timber frame at number 173, dated to the late 1200s. Mains water arrived centuries after walls like these. Try a cellar or under a board where the supply enters.
The villas that went up south of the High Street from 1868, and terraces such as Charles Street, usually have the valve under the kitchen sink or just inside the front door.
Homes built after 1918 on the old Berkhamsted Hall estate west of Swing Gate Lane, and the council houses at Gossoms End and at each end of Bridgewater Road, tend to have it under the sink or in a hall cupboard.
In the newer streets around Sycamore Rise and Ashlyns, check a cupboard by the front door or a service void. Canal side flats often have a communal valve elsewhere too.
Berkhamsted sits in a valley, with the ground climbing from about 344 feet by the river to around 590 feet on the tops. Up around Shootersway, Chesham Road and Woodland Avenue, bigger plots often mean long pipes out to garden rooms and outside taps.
Those runs are the ones that split in a hard frost, often with no valve of their own and no way to drain them. On the night the only answer may be the main stopcock. When we repair one, we can add a valve and drain point.
Most night calls in HP4 fall into a short list.
Burst, split or weeping pipes, including under floors
No water at all, or a supply down to a trickle
Cisterns overflowing or filling without stopping
Leaking hot water cylinders and their valves
Blocked toilets and drains backing up
Shower and booster pumps that have failed
High pressure jetting is on the van. Since 2011 most shared drains beyond your boundary belong to the sewerage company, and we will say if a blockage is theirs.
We ask what is leaking, whether the water is off and roughly how old the house is. Then we give you the call-out, the rate and the deposit, and you decide whether you want us to come.
If the job turns out bigger than it sounded, the engineer stops and prices it before carrying on.
A genuine 24 hour line, the charges explained before anyone sets off, and the common parts on the van.
Between 8am and 5pm on weekdays there is no call-out fee, and plumbing costs £140 + VAT for the first hour (£168 including VAT), with each half hour after that at £60 + VAT.
Evenings, nights and weekends carry a £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT) call-out on each attendance, added to the hourly rate. Out of hours plumbing is £198 + VAT for the first hour on weekday evenings until 8pm and weekends from 8am to 8pm, or £250 + VAT overnight from 8pm to 8am, and half of the first hour is paid up front.
The first hour is the minimum charge whatever time we come. Our pricing page lists every rate in one place.
A damp patch on a ceiling, a water meter that turns with every tap shut or a boiler that keeps losing pressure can all point to a hidden leak. Lifting floors on a guess is costly and often wrong.
Once the water is under control, a leak detection visit in Berkhamsted traces the source first, so only the section that has actually failed is opened up.
Get everyone outside, leave switches alone, strike no match and phone the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 first.
Once they have made the supply safe, our Gas Safe registered engineers, registration 956889, can find and repair whatever caused it.
Our engineer writes down what failed, where it was and what was replaced, which is the note most insurers ask for when you make a claim.
The repair carries our 12 month labour guarantee. Drying out, plaster and decoration are separate work, and we say plainly what the repair covered.

If it stops once the stopcock or a valve is shut, usually yes, and a weekday visit carries no call-out fee. Water still running or near electrics needs someone tonight.
Often in a cellar or under a floorboard, because the mains came long after the building. Find it now.
A £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT) call-out on each attendance, plus the out of hours rate, which is £198 + VAT for the first hour on weekday evenings until 8pm and weekends from 8am to 8pm, or £250 + VAT overnight from 8pm to 8am.
If the run has no valve of its own, close the main stopcock and call us. We can fit an isolation and drain point during the repair.
Yes. Jetting equipment is on the van, and we tell you if the blockage sits in a shared drain that belongs to the sewerage company.
Yes, 50% of the first hour up front on reactive call-outs.
Yes, a note of what failed, where it was and what we did about it.
