HERTFORDSHIRE, BEDFORDSHIRE & CAMBRIDGESHIRE
Datchworth is a parish of scattered greens and lanes, and a burst at the far end of one still starts with the same step. Ring 01462 506 374 at any hour and a person helps you stop the water first.

Out of hours visits cost more, so the useful question is whether the damage will grow before 8am. If the water is stopped and nothing electrical is wet, most jobs can wait.
Tonight: water still flowing with every valve you can find closed
Tonight: water through a ceiling, near a light or on the consumer unit
Morning: a burst on a garage or workshop supply you have isolated
Morning: a running cistern, a dripping tap or a slow drip under a sink
Tell us what you can see and we will say plainly whether a night call-out is money well spent.
Get a fixed price before we start
Call and talk to an engineer, or send us the details and we will come back to you with a price.
Clockwise, as far as it goes, with hand pressure only. An old valve that has not been turned for years can snap if it is forced, and then you have two problems.
If the inside stopcock will not move, the outside stop tap under a small lid near your boundary is the backup. On a house set well back from the lane, it may be further away than you expect.
Water near a light fitting or socket means switching off at the consumer unit, but only if you can get there without standing in water. If not, keep out of the room and tell us.
In the older cottages around Datchworth Green, the supply arrived long after the walls went up. Look under the kitchen sink first, then in a larder or old cupboard, then under the boards just inside the front door where the original pipe came through.
In the later detached houses, such as those along Bramfield Road, try the utility room, garage or downstairs cloakroom. There is often a second valve beside it for the outbuilding or garden supply.
Wherever it is, turn it once or twice a year on a quiet afternoon. Hard water seizes valves that are never moved, and you only find out when you need one to close.
Many homes here sit on generous plots with garages and workshops away from the house. A supply pipe running out to them gets no warmth from the house, and a split in a hard frost may go unnoticed until the bill arrives.
Rear extensions are the other weak spot. Pipes in a thin wall or under a flat roof freeze first, so in a cold snap leave a little heating on and drain any outside run you do not need.
Houses set back along the lanes can have a long private supply pipe from the boundary. That length belongs to you, not the water company, and on a home built before 1970 it may still be lead, according to Drinking Water Inspectorate guidance.
Under gravel or lawn, a leak often shows only as a climbing bill or weaker pressure. That calls for tracing rather than a night visit, and our leak detection in Datchworth page explains how we find it without digging up the drive.
A genuine 24 hour line, the charges explained before anyone sets off, and the common parts on the van.
Burst and split pipes, including frozen outbuilding supplies
A cylinder weeping from its base or a valve
Cisterns and cold tanks overflowing
Toilets and drains blocked and backing up indoors
Heating or shower pumps that have failed
No water at all belongs on the list too, but first ask the house next door. If they are dry as well, the fault is on the supply side and no plumber can fix it from your kitchen.
Ring between 8am and 5pm on a weekday and there is no call-out fee. Plumbing is £140 + VAT (£168 including VAT) for the first hour, which is the minimum, then £60 + VAT per half hour.
At any other time, including weekends, each attendance carries a call-out of £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT) on top of the hourly rate. Out of hours plumbing is £198 + VAT for the first hour on weekday evenings until 8pm and weekends from 8am to 8pm, or £250 + VAT overnight from 8pm to 8am.
Before anyone sets off, 50% of the first hour is paid. If the job turns out bigger than described, the engineer stops and prices it before carrying on. The full list is on our pricing page.
Whoever answers asks where the water is coming from, whether it has stopped, whether it is near electrics and how to find you, since a house off one of the lanes can be hard to spot in the dark. Then you hear the price and decide.
Gas is different. The village is on mains gas, and Cadent repaired a main on Mardleybury Road, between White Horse Lane and Rectory Lane, after an escape in 2017. If you smell gas, leave, touch no switches and ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 first.
Once the leak is fixed, the engineer tells you what failed and why, and can write that down for your insurer. Replastering or making good floors is priced separately and only done if you ask.

Usually not, if you can isolate it and the house is otherwise fine. A weekday visit avoids the call-out fee.
Leave it rather than forcing it, and close the outside stop tap at the boundary. If that is stuck too, ring and we will talk you through what else you can do.
No. Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, you pay only the hourly rate, with the first hour as the minimum.
If it has its own valve inside the warm part of the house, yes. Close it, open the outside tap, and there is nothing left in the pipe to split.
The homeowner, from the boundary stop tap to the house. The water company looks after the main and the pipe up to the boundary.
Where the water is coming from, whether you have stopped it, and clear directions. A landmark on the lane helps an engineer at night.
Yes, along with Hooks Cross and every other part of the parish, at the same rates.
