HERTFORDSHIRE, BEDFORDSHIRE & CAMBRIDGESHIRE
From timber-framed houses on Post Street to the newest homes in PE29, the first job in a leak is stopping the water. Ring 01462 506 374 at any hour and a person will help, then give you the cost.

Some problems will not wait, and others are far cheaper after 8am on a weekday, when there is no call-out fee. The line is usually clear:
Now: water through a ceiling or close to electrics
Now: a leak that keeps running with the stopcock shut
Now: foul water rising inside the house
Now: no water at all where someone vulnerable lives
Weekday: a dripping tap or a toilet you can isolate
Weekday: a slow drain that still empties
If you are not sure which list you are on, ring and describe it. We will tell you plainly if it can wait.

Call and talk to an engineer, or send us the details and we will come back to you with a price.
Godmanchester has more than 100 private listed buildings, many of them timber-framed Tudor houses. Water pipes in houses like these were threaded through long after the frame went up, wherever a route could be found.
That has a consequence in a leak. Water follows beams and joists and can appear some distance from where the pipe has actually failed, so a stain in the front room may start in a cupboard at the back.
Finish, plaster and old floors in a listed house are also harder to put right than modern ones, which makes stopping the water fast even more important.
Along Post Street and Earning Street, where the town’s two conservation areas are, the valve is wherever the mains happened to come in: under the sink, at the head of cellar steps, low behind the front wall or in a cupboard nobody opens. Expect it to be stiff and turn it steadily.
Twentieth century and newer homes usually have it under the kitchen sink, and failing that in a hall or utility cupboard where the pipe rises through the floor.
Do not force it with a wrench, because a snapped spindle makes things worse. Open the cold taps to drain what you can and tell us when you ring.
With the water off, switch off circuits near the leak at the consumer unit, but only if you can reach it without standing in water. Switch the boiler and immersion heater off too.
Open the lowest cold tap to drain the pipes, and move rugs, furniture and anything valuable. Put down towels and bowls, and in an old house protect floorboards and lime plaster where you can.
Burst and split pipes, including after a freeze
Leaking hot water cylinders
Overflowing toilet cisterns
Blocked toilets and drains backing up
Failed heating or shower pumps
We also attend when a house has lost its water supply altogether. Our engineers are our own staff, not subcontractors, and they arrive in fully stocked vans.
A genuine 24 hour line, the charges explained before anyone sets off, and the common parts on the van.
The town is separated from Huntingdon by the valley of the River Great Ouse, and Portholme meadow remains an important flood plain. If river or surface water ever reaches your boiler, controls or wiring, leave them switched off until they have been checked.
Drains behave differently when the ground is waterlogged. Since 2011 most shared drains and lateral pipes beyond your boundary belong to the sewerage company; inside it, our vans carry high pressure jetting, and a CCTV survey gives you a recording and written report that insurers accept.
Book in weekday working hours and you pay no call-out at all. Plumbing then costs £140 + VAT for the first hour (£168 including VAT), and £60 + VAT for each half hour after that.
At any other time, each attendance has a £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT) call-out on top of the hourly rate. The out of hours or overnight rate is given to you on the phone before we set off.
On reactive jobs we take 50% of the first hour in advance, and the first hour is the minimum. Anything beyond it is priced before it is done. Our pricing page lists every rate.
A person answers at any hour. We ask where the water is, whether it is stopped and what kind of house it is, and you hear the charges before we commit to anything.
If the leak is hidden, the engineer traces the source before anything is lifted and agrees with you what needs opening up. Ask for a written note of what was found for your insurer. In homes built before 1970 there may be a lead supply pipe, as the Drinking Water Inspectorate warns, and we will point it out if we see one.
Leave the house, do not touch switches and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 before contacting anyone else.
Once the supply is safe, our Gas Safe engineers, registration 956889, can repair the fault. Their work carries a 12 month labour guarantee.

Water you cannot stop, water near electrics, sewage coming up inside or a household without water that cannot cope. Most other faults can wait for a weekday visit with no call-out fee.
Wherever the mains first came in, often under a sink, at the top of cellar steps or low on the front wall. Turn it steadily, as it is likely to be stiff.
In a timber-framed house water runs along the frame, so the stain can be some distance from the leak.
It is £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT) per attendance, on top of the out of hours rate we quote before setting off.
Keep it and any affected electrics switched off until they have been checked by a qualified engineer.

We cover all of Godmanchester and PE29, from the listed houses of Post Street and Earning Street to the newer homes the town has added as it has grown, and out to the business parks on its southern edge.
