Burst pipe in Henlow or Henlow Camp? Ring 01462 506 374 at any hour. A person helps you get the water off and tells you the cost before an engineer leaves Stevenage.

Henlow is really two settlements. The village grew around a parish church, parts of which date from the 12th century, and its centre is a conservation area. Henlow Camp grew up beside the RAF station, first set up during the First World War, and some of its homes were built as married quarters for service families.
That matters in an emergency, because the plumbing in each is laid out differently, and knowing roughly what you have helps us talk you through the first few minutes.
Get a fixed price before we start
Call and talk to an engineer, or send us the details and we will come back to you with a price.
In the older cottages and houses around the High Street and the Church of St Mary the Virgin, try under the kitchen sink first, then under a floorboard near the front door, beside the chimney breast or in a cellar. Refitted kitchens often hide it behind a base unit, so pull the kickboard off and look with a torch.
Homes here were built over many decades and vary. Start under the kitchen sink, then any ground floor cupboard on the front wall. Newer homes usually have a service cupboard near the front door.
A small cover near the boundary hides the water company’s outside stop tap. It is the fallback if the inside valve is seized, not the first thing to search for in the dark.
A stopcock left alone for fifteen years often refuses to turn, or turns and then leaks from the spindle. Finding that out on a weekday afternoon is a nuisance. Finding it out with water coming through a ceiling is far worse.
Turn yours off and back on this week. If it is stiff or will not move, replacing it is a small weekday job with no call-out fee.
Out of hours visits cost more, so take a moment to sort the urgent from the rest:
Now: water you cannot stop, or water through a ceiling
Now: water running near the fuse board, a socket or a light fitting
Morning: a leak stopped at its own isolation valve
Morning: a burst on an outside run you can shut off
If you are not sure, describe it on the phone. We would rather tell you to wait than send someone you do not need.
Towards the Ivel meadows and Henlow Common, homes often have garages, stables, workshops and garden taps fed by long supply pipes. Those are the runs that split in a cold snap, usually because nobody drained them in autumn.
The fix is an isolating valve inside the heated part of the house, so the outside run can be shut off and emptied in November. If one has split tonight and you can isolate it, it can almost certainly wait for a weekday.
A genuine 24 hour line, the charges explained before anyone sets off, and the common parts on the van.
Close the stopcock fully, clockwise. If it is seized, do not force it with a tool, because a snapped spindle makes things worse. Use the outside stop tap instead.
If water is near electrics, switch off at the consumer unit, but only from dry ground. Turn off the boiler or immersion heater.
Open the downstairs cold taps to drain the pipes, put towels down and move what you can. Photos taken now help an insurance claim.
You will be asked where the water is, whether it is off, whether it is near electrics and whether you are in the village or Henlow Camp. Then you hear the charges before anyone sets off.
Between 8am and 5pm on a weekday nobody pays a call-out fee. The first hour, which is the minimum, is £140 + VAT (£168 including VAT), and each half hour after that is £60 + VAT.
At other times each attendance adds £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT) to the hourly rate, and the out of hours plumbing rate is quoted before we leave. Half the first hour is paid up front on a reactive call-out, and extra work is priced before it happens. See our pricing page.
If you smell gas, leave without using switches and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 before anyone else. Once they have made it safe, our Gas Safe engineers can repair the fault, and boiler breakdowns are covered on boiler repair in Henlow.
On the water side we deal with burst pipes, loss of supply, overflowing cisterns, leaking cylinders, failed pumps and blocked toilets and drains, which we clear with jetting kit carried on the van. Our engineers are our own staff, not subcontractors.
In the listed and conservation area properties in the village, pipes are often buried in solid floors or old walls. We make the leak safe first, then agree how to reach the pipe before any boards come up or plaster comes off.
Get the engineer to jot down what gave way and how it was put right. Insurers usually want it, alongside your photos, before they arrange making good.
