HERTFORDSHIRE, BEDFORDSHIRE & CAMBRIDGESHIRE
Huntingdon homes run from the old town centre to 1960s Oxmoor and newer streets at Hinchingbrooke. Whichever yours is, ring 01462 506 374 and a person helps you get the water off first.

A weekday visit between 8am and 5pm has no call-out fee, so it pays to be sure before calling someone out at night. These are the ones that genuinely cannot wait:
Water pouring through a ceiling or a light fitting
A leak that carries on with the stopcock closed
Water reaching sockets or the consumer unit
Sewage backing up into the house
A dripping overflow, a slow drain or a tap that will not stop can all be isolated overnight. Tell us what you can see and we will be straight with you about which it is.
Get a fixed price before we start
Call and talk to an engineer, or send us the details and we will come back to you with a price.
Turn it clockwise. If it is stiff, ease it back and forth rather than forcing it; an old valve can shear, leaving you worse off than before.
If water is near anything electrical, switch off at the consumer unit, but only while standing somewhere dry.
Turn off the boiler and any immersion heater, then run the cold taps at the lowest point of the house until they stop. Put towels down and move anything valuable.
Oxmoor was built in the 1960s to house London overspill, when Huntingdon was one of the expanded towns. In houses of that era the stopcock is normally under the kitchen sink or in a hall cupboard, though after two or three new kitchens it is often hidden behind a plinth or panel.
Hartford, Sapley and Stukeley Meadows follow a similar pattern: kitchen sink first, then a downstairs cupboard or cloakroom. Newer homes around Hinchingbrooke usually have a lever valve that closes with a quarter turn.
Inside the Huntingdon Conservation Area and along the High Street, the valve is wherever the mains first entered. That may be the front wall at floor level, the head of the cellar stairs or a cupboard nobody opens. Find yours on a quiet day, not a wet one.
National guidance from the Drinking Water Inspectorate says homes built before 1970 may still have lead supply pipes, and that the owner is responsible for the pipe from the outside stop valve into the house. That takes in the town centre and much of the 1960s stock.
Old lead and iron supply pipes tend to fail at joints and bends, often without warning. The 1960s houses have their own weak spots: original cylinders and gravity-fed pipework that are now decades old and can start to weep or overflow.
If you are not sure what your supply pipe is made of, we can check on a weekday visit and price a replacement before it becomes an emergency.
Burst and split pipes, including frozen loft runs
Leaks from joints, valves, baths and showers
No water, or pressure too weak to use
Overflowing cisterns and loft tanks
Leaking cylinders in airing cupboards
Blocked toilets and drains backing up indoors
Failed shower or heating pumps
The engineer arrives on a stocked van ready for any of these. With blocked drains we clear the cause with high pressure jetting, and since 2011 most shared drains beyond your boundary belong to the sewerage company.
A genuine 24 hour line, the charges explained before anyone sets off, and the common parts on the van.
A damp patch that keeps spreading, a water meter that turns with every tap shut, or a heating system losing pressure all suggest a leak hidden in a wall or floor. Lifting the whole floor is rarely the answer.
By isolating parts of the pipework one at a time and watching which loses water, the engineer narrows the search before opening anything. You are told what will be lifted, and why, before it happens.
There is no call-out fee on weekdays from 8am to 5pm. Outside those hours we charge £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT) on every attendance, in addition to the hourly rate.
The weekday plumbing rate is £140 + VAT for the first hour (£168 including VAT) and £60 + VAT for each half hour after. Out of hours plumbing is £198 + VAT for the first hour on weekday evenings until 8pm and weekends from 8am to 8pm, or £250 + VAT overnight from 8pm to 8am, and 50% of the first hour is taken up front.
The first hour is the minimum. If the job grows, you get the price before the engineer carries on. Full details are on our pricing page.
Gas comes first. Get out, leave switches alone and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
For water, we ask whether you have managed to stop it, where it is and what age the house is, then give you the full charges before committing anyone. The engineer is one of ours, Gas Safe registered under 956889, and the work has a 12 month labour guarantee. Ask for a written note of what failed if you are claiming on insurance.
The town lies on the north bank of the Great Ouse, and Portholme Meadow holds water in times of flood. If floodwater has reached a boiler, its controls or wiring, do not switch them back on until they have been checked.

Uncontrolled water, water near electrics or sewage inside the house. Most other faults can be made safe and left for a weekday visit with no call-out fee.
Remove the plinth or panel if you can do it quickly. If not, the outside stop valve is the fallback, and we can fit an accessible valve on the visit.
It is possible. Guidance says homes built before 1970 may have lead supply pipes, and the owner is responsible for the pipe from the outside stop valve inwards.
£50 + VAT (£60 including VAT) per attendance, on top of the out of hours rate, which we give you before setting off.
Not if water reached it or its controls. Keep it switched off and have a Gas Safe engineer look it over before it runs again.
Rarely. It usually means a float valve needs attention, which can wait for a weekday, but turn the stopcock off if it gets worse.
Usually. We isolate sections of pipe to narrow down where water is being lost, then open up only what is needed.
On reactive call-outs, half of the first hour is paid up front. The balance is settled once the job is done.
We cover PE29, including the town centre, Hartford, Oxmoor, Sapley, Stukeley Meadows, Hinchingbrooke, Newtown and the Priory area, and villages in PE28.
For boiler breakdowns see boiler repair in Huntingdon, or the Huntingdon area page for our other local work.
