Emergency Plumber in St Neots

Tonight, or a weekday job

Some problems cannot wait for daylight. Others can be made safe in two minutes and left for a weekday, when there is no call-out fee.

Ring now: water running through a ceiling or light fitting

Ring now: a burst that keeps flowing with the stopcock shut

Ring now: sewage coming back up inside the house

Ring now: no water at all with someone vulnerable at home

Can wait: a dripping tap or a running overflow

Can wait: a leak that stops once its isolation valve is closed

Somewhere in between? Describe it and we will help you decide.

Get a fixed price before we start

Call and talk to an engineer, or send us the details and we will come back to you with a price.

Your first five minutes

Shut off the supply

Turn the internal stopcock clockwise as far as it will go. If it is stiff, use steady pressure rather than a wrench, because an old spindle can snap.

Use the isolation valves

Toilets and washing machines usually have a small slotted valve on the feed. Turn the slot across the pipe and that one outlet stops while the rest of the house keeps its water.

Keep water off the electrics

If water is reaching sockets or a light, switch off at the consumer unit only if you can reach it dry. Otherwise stay clear of it and mention it on the call.

Finding the stopcock in a St Neots house

Around the High Street, Market Square and old Eynesbury, the mains arrived long after the buildings, so the stopcock could be under a sink, behind a panel or in a cupboard nobody opens.

On the post war roads by Hardwick Road and Duck Lane, try under the kitchen sink first and then the cloakroom. Over the river in Eaton Socon and Eaton Ford, the kitchen sink is again likely, followed by the garage where the main comes in.

On Love’s Farm, Wintringham and Monkfields, check the cupboard nearest the front door and under the stairs, as well as the sink. New homes should have a clearly placed valve, and it is worth finding it the week you move in.

Outside there is a boundary stop tap under a small lid in the path or verge. The water company owns the pipe up to that point, and the stretch from there into your home is yours.

Where pipes tend to fail in PE19

London overspill building in the 1960s added a large part of the town, and houses of that generation often still have imperial copper and ageing cylinders. Those joints let go in a frost or after a pressure change, and joining them to modern metric pipe needs the right adaptor, not a bodge.

Anglian Water’s supply here is hard, and scale seizes stopcocks and isolation valves that are never turned. Homes built before 1970 may also have a lead supply pipe, as Drinking Water Inspectorate guidance points out.

Underground leaks are awkward because much of the town sits on light soil over gravel beside the Great Ouse, and water spreads sideways away from the fault. Our leak detection in St Neots page explains how we trace it.

What we are called to

Burst and split pipes, inside and out

Leaking or failed hot water cylinders

Overflowing cisterns and loft tanks

Blocked toilets and drains backing up

Heating and shower pumps that have stopped

Blocked drains are cleared with high pressure jetting from the van. Since 2011 most shared drains beyond the boundary belong to the sewerage company, and if the blockage is on their side we tell you.

How out of hours charging works

A St Neots call on a weekday between 8am and 5pm carries no call-out fee. Plumbing is £140 + VAT for the first hour (£168 including VAT), then £60 + VAT per half hour, and the first hour is the minimum.

Outside those hours a call-out of £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT) applies to every attendance, on top of the hourly rate. Out of hours plumbing is £198 + VAT for the first hour on weekday evenings until 8pm and weekends from 8am to 8pm, or £250 + VAT overnight from 8pm to 8am.

Half the first hour is paid up front on a reactive call. If the job proves different from what you described, the engineer stops and prices the rest first.

If there is a smell of gas

Gas comes before water and before us. Get everyone out, leave light switches alone and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.

Once they have made the supply safe, we can trace and repair the fault. We are Gas Safe registered, number 956889.

What you will hear on the phone

A person answers 01462 506 374 at any hour and asks where the water is coming from, whether it is off and how old the house is. A garage main in Eaton Ford and a building off Market Square are different jobs.

You will know the call-out and rate before anyone sets off, and whether it can safely wait for weekday hours. Parking near the conservation area is tight, so mention any yard or passage access.

After the water is off

The engineer explains what failed and can write it down for your insurer, which helps if a ceiling or floor needs making good. That work is priced separately and only done if you ask.

Our engineers are our own staff, working from fully stocked vans, and our labour carries a 12 month guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Outside Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm there is a call-out of £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT) on every attendance, on top of the hourly rate, and you hear it before anyone sets off.

Water you cannot stop, water near electrics, sewage inside, or no supply where someone vulnerable lives. A drip you can isolate is usually cheaper left until a weekday.

The water company looks after the main and the pipe up to the boundary stop tap. The supply pipe from there into the house is the owner’s responsibility.

Yes. Many post war homes there have imperial copper, and we use proper adaptors so it meets modern metric pipe without a weak joint.

Yes, 50% of the first hour when you book a reactive call-out. Anything beyond that first hour is priced and agreed with you first.

Leave it rather than forcing it. Use the outside stop tap under the lid near your boundary, or the nearest isolation valve, and tell us when you ring.

Yes, both banks of the river and every part of PE19, at the same rates.

Turn the water off and do not lift anything on a guess. We trace the leak first and only open up where it points.

Areas we cover around St Neots

We cover all of PE19 on both banks of the Great Ouse: the town centre, Eynesbury, Eaton Socon, Eaton Ford, Love’s Farm, Wintringham and Monkfields.

For work that is not urgent, see plumbers in St Neots. Our rates are on the pricing page.

A person on the line, any hour

Ring 01462 506 374 from anywhere in PE19. We help you stop the water first, then give you the call-out and rate before anyone sets off.
