Emergency Plumber in Stotfold

When it needs someone tonight

Water coming through a ceiling or out of a wall

A leak the stopcock and valves will not stop

Water reaching sockets, lights or the fuse board

Sewage backing up into the house

A house with no water and a baby, an elderly relative or someone unwell in it

A drip, a running toilet or a leak that stopped once you isolated it can wait for a weekday, when there is no call-out fee between 8am and 5pm. If you are not sure, ring and describe it, and you will get an honest answer.

Get a fixed price before we start

Call and talk to an engineer, or send us the details and we will come back to you with a price.

Stop the water, protect the electrics

Turn the stopcock clockwise until it stops, then open a cold tap downstairs to let the remaining water run out. If one toilet, tap or appliance is the problem, the small isolation valve on its feed pipe will do.

If water has reached the electrics, switch off at the consumer unit, but only if you are not standing in water to do it. On the hot side, turn off the boiler or immersion heater too.

Stopcocks, old village and new estates

Queen Street, Brook Street and Stotfold Common

In the older village houses, after generations of alterations, the stopcock may be almost anywhere. If you do not know where yours is, have it found on a routine visit.

Fairfield Park houses

Despite their period looks, the plumbing inside is modern, and the stopcock is normally under the kitchen sink or in the utility room.

The converted hospital apartments

Expect long pipe runs, shared risers and an isolation point that may not be in your flat. Find out where it is before you need it.

Stotfold Park and Randall Fields

In these estate homes, try the kitchen sink and utility room first, then check for a stop tap under a small cover at the boundary.

Pipes buried in floors and walls

In the newer homes much of the pipework runs through floor screeds and behind plasterboard rather than along joists. A leak there usually shows first as a damp patch, a warm spot on the floor or pressure that keeps dropping.

Resist cutting into anything yourself. The leak is often at a fitting rather than along the pipe, and tracing its likely route and isolating sections first means only the right patch of floor or wall is opened.

Your water supplier

Central Bedfordshire is served by two water companies, Anglian Water and Affinity Water. The company for your address is named on your water bill, and that is who to ring if the whole street loses its supply.

The stop tap at the boundary belongs to the supplier, but the pipe from there into your house belongs to you. A leak on it, even under the drive, is the homeowner’s to repair. Give your internal stopcock a turn every few months so you know it still works when it matters.

Jobs we come out for

Most urgent calls in SG5 fall into one of these:

Burst and leaking pipes, above floors and under them

No water in the house when neighbours still have a supply

Cisterns and tanks overflowing

Hot water cylinders leaking

Blocked toilets and drains, cleared with jetting on the van

Shower and heating pumps that have failed

If you are not sure which it is, describe what you can see and hear. That usually tells us what the engineer needs to bring.

How out of hours charges work

On weekdays from 8am to 5pm there is no call-out fee, and plumbing costs £140 + VAT (£168 including VAT) for the first hour, then £60 + VAT for each half hour after.

At any other time a £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT) call-out is added to each attendance, on top of the hourly rate. Out of hours plumbing is £198 + VAT for the first hour on weekday evenings until 8pm and weekends from 8am to 8pm, or £250 + VAT overnight from 8pm to 8am.

Reactive visits need 50% of the first hour paid in advance, and the first hour is the minimum. After that, no extra work happens without a price agreed with you. Our pricing page lists the rest.

Gas smells, and homes without gas

If you smell gas, leave the property, avoid switches and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 before anything else. Once it is safe, our Gas Safe engineers, registration 956889, can repair the fault.

Not every home here has a gas boiler. The flats at Elm House on Arlesey Road run on air source heat pumps, and the housebuilder for the homes approved south of Arlesey Road in 2025 told the planning committee they would be entirely fossil fuel free. Tell us what heats your home when you ring.

After the water is off

Once the leak is repaired properly, we can give you a written note of what failed and what we did, which is what your insurer will ask for. Photograph the damage before you start clearing up. If a ceiling or floor had to be opened to reach the pipe, the engineer will tell you what needs making good afterwards, so you can plan it or include it in a claim.

Our engineers are directly employed, not subcontracted, and the work carries a 12 month labour guarantee.
