A burst or leak in Watton at Stone, whatever the time. On 01462 506 374 a person answers, talks you through isolating the water and tells you the charges first.

Ring straight away for any of these in the village:
A leak that neither the stopcock nor a local valve will stop
Water coming through a ceiling or getting near electrics
No water reaching the property at all
A leaking or blocked line that stops a pub or business trading
Most other things, such as a dripping tap, a weeping joint caught in a bowl or a cistern that keeps filling, can wait for a weekday between 8am and 5pm, when there is no call-out fee.
Get a fixed price before we start
Call and talk to an engineer, or send us the details and we will come back to you with a price.
Close the stopcock inside the house by turning it clockwise. If it will not move, try the isolation valve on the pipe feeding the leak, a slotted screw that shuts with a quarter turn.
If water is near electrics, switch off at the consumer unit as long as you can reach it without standing in water. Then open the cold taps to drain the pipes.
If you have a cellar and the water there is rising, keep out of it until the power is off.
In the newer homes, the stopcock is nearly always under the kitchen sink, with the outside stop tap in a small chamber near the front boundary. The inside one often seizes from never being touched, so test it on a quiet day.
Many of the nineteenth century houses here are in yellow stock brick with steep tiled or slate roofs. Check under the sink first, then behind boxed in cupboards, under a floorboard by the front door or at the top of the cellar steps.
The village has houses from early Tudor to late Georgian times. After generations of re-plumbing there may be two or three valves, and not all of them will still work.
Bursts arrive in two waves: the first hard frost, and then the thaw that reveals the damage. The pipes at risk are those outside the heated part of the house.
In older solid walled houses there is no cavity, so a pipe on an outside wall is effectively outdoors. On the newer streets the usual culprit is a loft pipe to the cold water tank with insulation laid over it, leaving the pipe on the cold side.
Old compression joints also weep in time, and scale on a valve seat can stop it closing when you need it.
The Watton-at-Stone Conservation Area was first designated in 1975. Of the 50 listed structures in the parish, 26 are inside it.
If your home is listed, tell us when you ring. In an emergency we stop the water and make the repair with as little disturbance as possible, and anything visible that would need changing is discussed with you first.
Burst and leaking pipes, water through ceilings, overflowing cisterns and tanks, leaking hot water cylinders and properties with no water while the road has supply.
Also blocked toilets and drains, failed pumps and leaks on pub and business supplies. Our engineers are our own staff in stocked vans, not subcontractors.
A genuine 24 hour line, the charges explained before anyone sets off, and the common parts on the van.
Ring 01462 506 374 in the small hours or at teatime and a person picks up in the same way. We ask where the water is, whether you have stopped it, whether it is a home or a business, and which part of the village you are in.
Then you are told the call-out charge, the rate and the deposit before an engineer leaves Stevenage, and you decide.
Our standard hours are 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. In those hours there is no call-out fee, and plumbing is £140 + VAT (£168 including VAT) for the first hour, which is the minimum, then £60 + VAT per half hour.
Outside those hours each attendance has a £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT) call-out on top of the hourly rate, and the out of hours rate is £198 + VAT for the first hour on weekday evenings until 8pm and weekends from 8am to 8pm, or £250 + VAT overnight from 8pm to 8am.
We ask for 50% of the first hour up front on reactive call-outs, and nothing is added beyond the first hour without your agreement. Our prices are published in full.
A wet patch with no obvious source does not mean lifting a whole floor, which matters in an old house. Pipework can be isolated and pressure tested in sections; see leak detection in Watton at Stone.
Making good usually goes through insurance. Ask the engineer for a written note of what failed and what was done, and our labour carries a 12 month guarantee.
Do not investigate. Leave the building, do not operate switches, and ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
We can repair the appliance or pipework once the supply has been made safe. Our Gas Safe registration is 956889.

Ice splits the pipe while it is frozen, and the leak only shows once it thaws. That is why bursts come in two waves.
Try under the sink, in boxed in cupboards, under the floor near the front door or at the cellar head.
