Emergency Plumber in Wheathampstead

Does it need someone tonight

Plenty of things that feel urgent late at night are cheaper to sort at 8am on a weekday. The test is whether you can stop the water, and whether electrics or ceilings are at risk while you wait.

Call now for water you cannot stop even with the stopcock closed, water coming through a ceiling or running near sockets and light fittings, or a home with no water where someone vulnerable lives. A dripping tap, a toilet that keeps refilling or a leak you have isolated at a valve can wait.

Not sure? Ring 01462 506 374 and describe it. We would rather talk you through isolating it than send someone out at the night rate for nothing.

The first five minutes

Close the stopcock clockwise until it stops. If it is stiff, use steady pressure rather than a wrench, because a snapped spindle makes the night much longer.

Where water is reaching the electrics, only switch off at the consumer unit if you can reach it from dry floor. If hot water is escaping, turn off the boiler or immersion as well.

Then open the cold taps downstairs to drain the pipes. A quarter turn with a small screwdriver closes the isolation valve on most toilet and basin feeds, which lets you keep water everywhere else.

Finding the stopcock in a Wheathampstead house

The old centre, The Hill and Lower Luton Road

The village was in Domesday, and some houses here date back centuries, long before mains water. Look under the kitchen sink, then in a larder, then for a loose board or a hinged panel. If nobody in the house has ever found it, that is a job for a calm weekday.

Amwell and Gustard Wood

The eighteenth century cottages at Amwell follow the same pattern: somewhere low, near where the supply enters, often behind something added later.

Post war homes on the Murphy’s and Helmet Works sites

Try the kitchen sink cupboard and the hall cupboard. Expect the valve to have been painted over at some point, so it may take a few careful turns before it moves.

Newer houses in the village

Usually a service cupboard near the front door. Outside there is also a stop tap in the footpath or verge, which is the fallback if the inside one will not turn.

Where pipes let go in the village

The same weak points fail every winter. In lofts under steep old clay tile roofs, pipework often sits beneath the insulation instead of under a layer of it, so it spends the night on the cold side.

Outbuildings, garages and long external runs to garden taps are the other usual suspects, and a split in a frozen pipe often only shows once it thaws.

The River Lea runs through the village past the Mill Bridge and the Bull. Where houses sit low by the river, pipes below floor level have a harder life and gullies can back up in heavy rain.

What we come out to

Most night calls here fall into a handful of types.

Burst and split pipes, including in lofts

No water, or a trickle

Overflowing cisterns and tanks

Leaking cylinders and valves

Blocked toilets and drains

Pumps that have failed

Jetting kit is on the van. Since 2011 most shared drains and laterals beyond the boundary belong to the sewerage company, so we will tell you if a blockage is on their side.

What happens on the phone

We ask what is leaking, whether the water is off and where you are in the village. Then you hear the call-out charge, the rate and the deposit before you decide.

Our vans carry the fittings most repairs need, so the engineer comes to finish the job rather than look at it.

Answered by a person, day or night

A genuine 24 hour line, the charges explained before anyone sets off, and the common parts on the van.

What out of hours costs

A call on a weekday between 8am and 5pm carries no call-out fee, and plumbing is charged at £140 + VAT for the first hour (£168 including VAT), then £60 + VAT per half hour.

Outside those hours there is a call-out charge of £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT) on every attendance, on top of the hourly rate. Out of hours plumbing is £198 + VAT for the first hour on weekday evenings until 8pm and weekends from 8am to 8pm, or £250 + VAT overnight from 8pm to 8am, and 50% of the first hour is taken up front.

That first hour is the minimum charge. Should the job turn out different from the description, the engineer stops, prices it and waits for your answer.

If you can smell gas

Leave the house, do not use light switches or anything electrical, and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 before you ring anyone else.

Once the supply has been made safe, our Gas Safe engineers can trace the cause, whether that is an appliance, a joint or the boiler itself.

Leaks hiding under floors

A damp patch with no obvious source, a meter that spins with every tap shut, or a boiler that keeps losing pressure can all mean a leak you cannot see. Pulling up floors on a hunch in an old house is costly.

Once the water is under control, leak detection finds where it is coming from, so only the right section is opened up.

Once it is fixed

The engineer leaves a written note of what failed, where, and what was done, which is what your insurer will ask for. Our labour is guaranteed for 12 months.

Drying out and redecoration are separate from the plumbing repair.

Frequently asked questions

Water you cannot stop, water near electrics, or a leak coming through a ceiling. A drip you can catch or isolate can usually wait for a weekday visit with no call-out fee.

Yes, outside weekday hours it is £50 + VAT (£60 including VAT) per attendance, on top of the hourly rate, and you hear it before anyone leaves.

The water company is responsible up to your boundary. The supply pipe from the boundary into the house belongs to the homeowner.

Close the isolation valve nearest the leak, or the outside stop tap if you can reach it safely. Forcing a seized stopcock can break it.

We take 50% of the first hour before a reactive visit in the village, and anything more is agreed first.

Turn off the stopcock and warm the pipe gently, never with a flame. If it has split, ring us.

Yes, both hamlets, at the same rates as the village.

Yes, we carry jetting equipment, and we will say so if the blockage is in a shared drain the sewerage company owns.
