HARROW, STANMORE AND PINNER
A borough built by the railway, mostly between the wars
The Metropolitan Railway reached Harrow in 1880, and the “Metro-land” name followed in 1915. Stanmore and Canons Park
Stanmore Hill has been a conservation area since 1975, and its Article 4 direction brings alterations to houses under planning control. Canons Park Estate, laid out from 1926 and finished by 1935, is mostly Tudor Revival detached and semi-detached houses, protected since April 1990.
Pinner
Pinner High Street runs from 15th century timber frames through 18th and 19th century red brick and Victorian stock brick to 1930s Mock Tudor, with 26 listed buildings and Article 4 directions since 1995 covering roofs and elevations. Around it sit the garden estates of 1923 to 1939.
Harrow on the Hill. A conservation area since 1968, with 43 grade II listed buildings and an Article 4 direction over every façade facing a road or open space. A flue, pipe or outdoor unit on those fronts is planned before it is priced.
