When an oil boiler makes sense
If your property has no mains gas connection, oil is usually the most straightforward choice. It gives you high output for larger and older houses, which matters in properties that are harder to heat, and modern condensing oil boilers are far more efficient than the units they typically replace.
What replacing an oil boiler involves
More than a straight swap, usually. We look at the condition of your existing tank, since older single-skin tanks may not meet current regulations. We check the position of the tank and its distance from the building. We look at whether the flue needs relocating for a condensing unit, and where the condensate will discharge.
Tank regulations, which catch people out
Oil storage is regulated. Depending on capacity and position, your tank may need to be bunded, meaning a second containment layer around it. Distances from buildings and boundaries are specified. An old tank that was compliant when installed may not be now. We will tell you at survey whether yours needs replacing, and we would rather flag it upfront than discover it on installation day.
Servicing
Oil boilers need annual servicing, and more so than gas, because the burner and nozzle need cleaning to keep running efficiently. We service what we install.
