Choose a Gas Safe registered engineer whose ID card shows they are qualified for your type of boiler, who follows the manufacturer’s service instructions, checks combustion with a flue gas analyser, and fills in your boiler’s service record before they leave. If the engineer never takes the case off, never puts an analyser probe in the flue and leaves no paperwork, you have not had a full service, and your manufacturer’s warranty may not accept it.

A boiler service is one of those jobs where you cannot easily see what you paid for. The boiler looked fine before and it looks fine after. That makes it tempting to book the cheapest or quickest option. The trouble is that the checks that matter, the combustion reading, the seals, the condensate trap and the safety devices, all happen inside the case, and they take time.
A proper boiler service does three jobs. It keeps you safe, because it looks for the faults that could let carbon monoxide escape. It keeps the boiler efficient, because a dirty burner or heat exchanger wastes gas. And it keeps your warranty valid, because most manufacturers only honour a claim if the boiler has been serviced every year.
Under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, only a Gas Safe registered engineer may work on a gas appliance. Every registered engineer carries a photo ID card with a licence number.
Check the back matters, because registration is by appliance type. You can confirm an engineer’s details on the Gas Safe Register website before they arrive. Vantage is Gas Safe registered under number 956889.
For oil or LPG boilers the rules and qualifications are different, so ask about those specifically if that is what you have.
Every manufacturer publishes its own service procedure in the installation and servicing manual, and a good engineer follows it for your model. Across the major brands, a full service usually covers:
The last three steps are the ones people most often skip. They are also the ones that prove the boiler is safe.
A condensing boiler has to burn gas with the right mix of air. Too little air and the burner makes more carbon monoxide. Too much and efficiency drops. You cannot judge that by looking at the flame through a small window.
A flue gas analyser measures what is actually coming out of the flue: carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide or oxygen, and the ratio between them. The engineer compares the reading with the limits in the manufacturer’s manual. Engineers use analysers in line with BS 7967, the British Standard for using portable combustion analysers on domestic gas appliances.
When you book, ask a simple question: “Will you do a flue gas analysis and give me the readings?” A good engineer will say yes without hesitating.
Most boiler manufacturers make an annual service a condition of their warranty. The wording varies by brand and by the length of guarantee you have, so check your own paperwork, but the common conditions are:
The Benchmark scheme is the industry’s commissioning and servicing record. Completing the Benchmark checklist at installation is one way installers show the commissioning required by Part L of the Building Regulations, and the service record pages are where each annual service is logged. Keep your manual somewhere safe, and if the engineer does not fill it in, ask them to.
If you rent out a property, remember that a landlord gas safety check is a separate legal requirement from a service. Our guide on how landlords should choose a gas safety engineer covers what the check involves, and we can arrange a landlord gas safety certificate on the same visit as the service.
| What happens | Quick visit | Full service |
|---|---|---|
| Case removed and inside inspected | Often not | Yes |
| Flue gas analysis before and after | Rarely | Yes, with readings recorded |
| Condensate trap cleaned | No | Yes |
| Safety devices tested | Sometimes | Yes |
| Benchmark record completed | Sometimes a sticker only | Yes |
| Acceptable to most manufacturers for warranty | Unlikely | Yes |
Signs you are not getting a proper service
You do not need to touch anything inside the boiler, and you should not. Between services it is worth keeping an eye on the pressure gauge (most boilers want roughly 1 to 1.5 bar when cold, but check your user guide), bleeding radiators if they are cold at the top, and noting any error codes. If the pressure keeps dropping, our guide to a boiler that keeps losing pressure explains the usual causes.
Our boiler service price is published on our prices page, so you know what you will pay before we arrive. If the service turns up a fault, we explain it and quote the parts before we fit them, and nothing is done without your agreement. New boiler packages from us include the first year’s service. For more on what affects the price of a service, see our boiler service cost guide.
Once a year is the standard advice, and most manufacturers make an annual service a condition of their warranty. Autumn is a sensible time, before the heating is working hard. Check your warranty for the exact service window it requires.
A full service on a typical domestic boiler usually takes around 40 minutes to an hour. It can take longer if the boiler has not been serviced for a while, if parts need cleaning, or if a fault is found.
Not automatically. A service maintains the boiler, while a landlord gas safety record checks every gas appliance and flue in a rented property. They are often done on the same visit, but you should ask for both if you need both.
Any engineer qualified for domestic gas boilers can service it, as long as they follow the manufacturer’s service instructions and complete the Benchmark record. We repair and service all the major brands, including Ideal, Vaillant, Worcester Bosch, Baxi and Glow-worm.
It can. Most manufacturers ask for proof of a service every year, and a gap may mean a claim is refused. If you have missed one, book a service as soon as you can and check your warranty terms with the manufacturer.
