Ideal Boiler Reviews 2026: Are Ideal Boilers Any Good?
Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire & Cambridgeshire
Yes, Ideal boilers are good, reliable boilers when you choose the right range and have them fitted properly: the Logic Max and Vogue Max carry a 10 year parts and labour guarantee, and the Vogue Max can be registered for 12 years by an Ideal Max accredited installer. The weak spot is the entry-level Logic, which only comes with a 2 year parts and labour guarantee, so for most homes the Max ranges are the ones worth buying.
In short
- Ideal has made heating products since 1906 and is one of the most widely fitted boiler brands in the UK, so parts are easy to get and engineers know the boilers well.
- The current range splits into three combis: Logic (basic), Logic Max (compact, 10 year guarantee) and Vogue Max (larger, stainless steel heat exchanger, up to 12 years).
- Mixed reviews online mostly come from basic models fitted to dirty systems without a filter or a clean, not from the Max ranges fitted well.
- The most common faults we see on older Ideal boilers are flame loss, low pressure and fan faults, and most are routine repairs.
- For a one-bathroom home, the Logic Max is the sensible choice. For bigger homes or the longest guarantee, the Vogue Max.

Who Ideal are and why it matters
Ideal Heating traces its history back to 1906 and launched the Logic range in 2009. Ideal says its Max boilers are made in the UK. Because so many Ideal boilers are installed across the country, merchants stock the common parts, and almost every heating engineer has worked on one. That matters more than it sounds: a boiler that can be fixed the same day is a better boiler to own than one that waits a week for a part.
We are an Ideal Max accredited installer and a Vaillant myREWARDS installer, so Ideal is one of the two brands we fit most. We repair and service all the major brands, including Worcester Bosch, Baxi, Glow-worm and Viessmann, which gives us a fair view of how Ideal boilers hold up against the rest. If you are replacing a boiler, our boiler installation page explains how the survey and fitting work.
The Ideal combi range compared
Ideal also makes system and heat-only versions of the Logic Max and Vogue Max, but the combis are what most people are comparing. These figures come from Ideal’s own product pages and specification sheets.
| Logic | Logic Max | Vogue Max | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sizes | C24, C30, C35 | C24, C30, C35 | C26, C32, C40 |
| Hot water flow (35°C rise) | See Ideal’s specification sheet | 9.9, 12.4 and 14.5 litres a minute | 10.6, 13.1 and 16.4 litres a minute |
| Heat exchanger | Aluminium | Cast aluminium | Stainless steel |
| System filter in the box | No | Yes, Ideal System Filter | Yes, Ideal System Filter |
| Display | Backlit display | Large colour screen | 3.5 inch colour display |
| Guarantee (registered within 30 days, serviced yearly) | 2 years parts and labour, 10 years on the heat exchanger | 10 years parts and labour | 10 years, or 12 years through a Max accredited installer |
| Casing size | Compact | 700 x 395 x 278 mm | 740 x 445 x 330 mm |
Two things stand out. First, the guarantee gap between the Logic and the Logic Max is large, and on a boiler that should last well over a decade that difference is worth far more than any saving on the boiler itself. Second, every Logic Max combi limits its central heating output to 24.2 kW whatever the badge says; the bigger number only applies to hot water. That suits most homes, because very few need more heating output than that.
Aluminium or stainless steel: does it matter?
The Logic and Logic Max use an aluminium heat exchanger. Ideal’s view is that aluminium conducts heat very well, allows larger waterways, runs quietly and suits replacing a boiler on an older system. The Logic Max has won Quiet Mark awards for low noise. The Vogue Max uses stainless steel, the material most premium boilers use.
In practice, both work well on a clean system. What damages any heat exchanger is sludge, debris and poor water quality in the heating circuit. That is why a magnetic filter, a proper clean of the system and inhibitor matter more than the metal. Every new boiler package we fit includes a magnetic system filter, the first year’s service and removal of the old boiler.
The honest pros and cons
What Ideal does well
- Parts availability. Common Ideal parts are stocked widely, which keeps repair times short.
- Compact sizes. The Logic Max fits most kitchen cupboards, which helps when you are swapping like for like.
- Long guarantees on the Max ranges. Ten years parts and labour as standard, and up to 12 on the Vogue Max through an accredited installer.
- Built-in filtration. The Max combis come with Ideal’s own system filter.
- Clear fault codes. Ideal uses a simple set of F and L codes across its ranges, so faults are quick to diagnose.
Where Ideal falls short
- The basic Logic. A 2 year parts and labour guarantee is short for a boiler you expect to keep for many years.
- Sensitive to dirty systems. Like any modern condensing boiler, an Ideal fitted to a sludged system without cleaning it first will give trouble.
- Vogue Max size. It is noticeably bigger than the Logic Max, so check the space before choosing it.
- Heating output cap on Logic Max. Fine for most homes, but a large, poorly insulated house may be better served by a Vogue Max or a system boiler.
Why Ideal boilers get mixed reviews online
Search for Ideal reviews and you will find forum threads from people on their third breakdown. It is worth understanding why. Ideal sells a very large number of boilers, including a lot of entry-level Logic boilers fitted at the cheapest possible price, sometimes to old systems full of sludge and with no filter. Those installs fail early whatever the badge on the front.
When we look at the faults on older Ideal boilers, the same few come up again and again:
- Flame loss and ignition lockout (F2 and L2). Often a worn flame detection electrode, a gas pressure problem or a frozen condensate pipe. See our Ideal F2 fault code guide.
- Low water pressure (F1). Usually a small leak or an expansion vessel that has lost its charge. Topping up clears it for a while, but the cause still needs finding.
- Fan faults (F3). A wear part on any boiler of a certain age.
None of these is unique to Ideal. Every major brand has its own version of the same list. The boilers that give the least trouble are the ones sized properly, fitted on a clean system, protected by a filter and serviced every year, regardless of make. Our boiler servicing keeps the manufacturer guarantee valid and catches worn parts early.
Which Ideal boiler suits which home?
| Your home | Sensible Ideal choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Flat or small house, one bathroom | Logic Max C24 or C30 | Compact, enough hot water for one shower at a time, 10 year guarantee |
| Three or four bedrooms, bathroom plus en suite, showers rarely overlap | Logic Max C35 or Vogue Max C32 | More hot water flow, still a single combi |
| Larger home, two bathrooms used together | Vogue Max C40, or a system boiler with a cylinder | Higher flow, and a cylinder handles several taps at once |
| Home that keeps its loft tanks | Logic Max or Vogue Max heat-only | Works with the existing tank system |
A combi can only deliver what your mains water supply gives it. Ideal’s installation manual for the Logic Max combi lists a minimum inlet pressure of 0.8 bar for the C24 and 1.3 bar for the C30 and C35, so the survey should check your flow and pressure before recommending a size. Our best combi boilers guide covers sizing in more detail.
How long do Ideal boilers last?
Ideal describes around 15 years as the average life of a boiler and heating system, which is in line with the other major manufacturers. Plenty run longer. The biggest factors are a clean system, the right size of boiler and a yearly service. Our guide on how long a boiler lasts explains the signs that one is nearing the end.
How we price it
Installations are quoted as a fixed price after a free survey, so the price you agree is the price you pay. You can get your price online in a couple of minutes with our boiler quote tool. If you would rather keep your current boiler going, repairs are charged at the rates published on our prices page.
Frequently asked questions
Are Ideal boilers as good as Worcester Bosch?
On a like-for-like basis, the Ideal Max ranges hold up well against other mainstream brands, including Worcester Bosch, and the guarantees are comparable. The quality of the installation, the condition of the heating system and yearly servicing make a bigger difference to reliability than the brand. We repair and service both.
Which is better, Ideal or Vaillant?
Both are solid choices, and we fit both as an Ideal Max accredited installer and a Vaillant myREWARDS installer. The Logic Max is compact and comes with its own filter, while Vaillant’s ecoTEC range offers strong controls options. The right answer depends on your hot water demand, space and budget, which the survey will establish.
What are the most common problems with Ideal boilers?
On older Ideal boilers we most often see flame loss (F2 or L2), low pressure (F1) and fan faults (F3). Most are routine repairs using parts that are easy to get. Many can be prevented with a clean system, a filter and an annual service.
Is the Ideal Logic worth buying over the Logic Max?
For most people, no. The Logic comes with a 2 year parts and labour guarantee plus 10 years on the heat exchanger, while the Logic Max has 10 years parts and labour and a system filter in the box. Over the life of the boiler the longer guarantee is usually worth more than the difference.
Do I have to service an Ideal boiler to keep the guarantee?
Yes. Ideal’s guarantees depend on the boiler being registered within 30 days of installation and serviced every year by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Miss a service and the extended guarantee can lapse.
