Godmanchester sits on the south bank of the River Great Ouse, directly across the water from Huntingdon, with Portholme Meadow forming the flood plain to the west and north west and Stoneyhill Brook carrying the valley character south. The oldest streets, Post Street and The Causeway, run along the river itself, and rear gardens on The Causeway back straight onto the mill race. Damp ground hides leaking water. Near the river the ground holds moisture for much of the year. The camera reads surface temperature rather than seeing through the structure, so we use it alongside the other methods, but it is usually where the survey starts and it is completely non-invasive.
Acoustic detection and correlation. A pressurised leak makes noise. Ground microphones pick it up, and a correlator listening at two points on the same pipe can narrow a buried leak to a short section of run. That is the difference between one neat hole and a trench across a garden. Acoustic work is at its best on metal pipe. Plastic carries sound poorly, so on plastic runs tracer gas takes over.
Tracer gas. With the pipe isolated and drained we introduce a hydrogen and nitrogen mix, safe and non flammable at the concentration used. The gas escapes through the smallest defect and rises, and a sensitive detector picks it up at the surface. Under screed, under solid floors and on runs where nothing else has worked, this is the method that ends the search.
Moisture meters and hygrometers. These map how far the water has travelled, which tells us where the leak is not, and they let us confirm afterwards that the building is actually drying out.
Isolation and pressure testing. Sometimes the quickest progress is disciplined elimination, circuit by circuit and valve by valve, proving which part of the system is losing water before a single piece of kit comes out of the van.
Post Street, The Causeway and The Lanes. The historic core, laid out on the old Roman street pattern, with timber framed and Georgian buildings, uneven floors and pipework altered over centuries. Water from a leak travels along beams and voids and appears well away from its source, so the damp patch is rarely above the fault. A good share of calls that arrive as plumbing leaks turn out to be sealing failures. Water finding its way past a shower tray edge, a seal that’s failed at the waste, or tanking that was never properly continuous behind the tiling. Pressure testing the pipework won’t find these, simply because the pipes themselves are not the problem.
