Old buildings, old pipework, and a town the Knights Templar laid out
Baldock is one of the most historic places we work in. The Victorian terraces that grew up around the railway after the station opened in 1850 are a different job again, usually straightforward once you know which era of extension you are dealing with. And on the newer Clothall Common and Baldock East estates, the plumbing is modern and standard, the kind of job that goes quickly because nothing is hiding behind a Georgian skirting board.
One more local point. The Ivel rises from springs inside the town itself, and low lying ground near the old watercourses can behave the way low lying ground always does after heavy rain, so we treat pipework and fittings accordingly on those streets.
Winter bursts, and where Baldock pipes freeze
Baldock is a compact market town, but it still has plenty of older housing with lofts, outbuildings and long external runs, especially around the historic centre. Every winter the same weak points let go.
Loft pipework. Insulation laid under the pipes instead of over them leaves the pipework on the cold side of the blanket. In steep old clay tile roofs the loft space gets properly cold.
Outbuildings and garages. Often unheated, single skin, and commonly carrying the feed to an outside tap.
External walls. Pipes chased into an outside wall in an extension, with nothing between them and the frost.
Outside taps. With no internal isolator and no way to drain down, a split is all but guaranteed. Fitting an isolation valve inside and draining the tap each autumn takes five minutes.
If a pipe has already frozen, turn the water off at the stopcock, keep every naked flame away from it, and call us. The split usually only shows when the ice thaws, so the quiet hour before the thaw is exactly when to get it isolated.
