This valley is odd for water. Go one town north to Ware and you are on Affinity, whose published zone figure there is 388 mg/l, with Hertford published at 318 mg/l. Cross a boundary and both the supplier and the hardness move.
At 278 mg/l, scale is the quiet cause behind a large share of our Hoddesdon callouts. Shower mixers lose their temperature control because the cartridge is furred. Ball valves stick, immersion heaters coat up and burn out early, and isolation valves seize open, which you only discover at the worst moment. The High Street conservation area. Designated in June 1968 and enlarged in January 1980, it takes in the Market Place, Amwell Street and Burford Street at the north end and follows the High Street south. Much of its south eastern edge is the New River, which still carries drinking water for Thames Water four centuries after it was dug. Timber framed and Georgian buildings here have solid walls, uneven floors and pipe runs that follow no modern logic. Cock Lane, Paul’s Lane, Bell Lane and The Knowle. Older streets on the western side of the conservation area. Extensions and conversions stacked up over decades mean several generations of plumbing in one house, and tracing what feeds what is the first hour of any leak job here.
Rye Park and the north end. Hertfordshire’s surface water management plan flags this side of Hoddesdon as a flooding hotspot, recording ponding on Beyers Prospect, Ware Road and Bridle Way, with Ditchfield Road and Tregelles Road appearing in the same evidence. The Lea and the Stort meet near Rye House, though the county’s finding is that local flooding comes mainly from culvert and sewer capacity, not rivers overtopping. For homeowners here, external gullies, waste runs and pipework in low outbuildings deserve extra attention.
The 1960s and 1970s centre. Flats over shops around the Tower Centre and Fawkon Walk carry the pipework of their era, with communal supplies, ageing gate valves and early indirect cylinders. Yewlands and Woodlands Drive. Arts and Crafts and early 20th century houses in big plots inside the conservation area.
