Harmer Green, Rabley Heath and the outlying lanes. Detached properties, long external supply runs from the boundary to the house, and in a hard winter that run is where things freeze. It is also worth knowing who owns what: the supply pipe from the boundary stop tap into your house is the homeowner’s responsibility, not the water company’s, so a leak on that run is your bill, and whether any of it is covered is a question for your policy rather than for us.
Digswell and the roads around Welwyn North station. Predominantly twentieth century, and the pipework has usually been through at least one refit. Loft tanks are still common here, and a loft tank is the thing that causes the worst damage when it fails, because it empties an entire cistern through the ceiling. Insulated properly, with a working overflow you can actually see, it is fine. Neglected, it is the most expensive plumbing failure a house can have.
