The repairs we get called out to most
Most plumbing repairs fall into a handful of categories, and knowing which one you have helps you judge whether it is urgent.
- Dripping taps and mixers. Usually a cartridge or washer. Cheap, quick, and worth doing before the seat gets damaged.
- Running or leaking toilets. Commonly the flush valve or the fill valve. A continuously running toilet wastes a serious amount of water.
- Leaking traps and waste connections. Often just a seal, sometimes a compression joint that has been disturbed.
- Low or no pressure at one outlet. Frequently a blocked aerator or an isolation valve partly closed rather than anything structural.
- Leaks under floors or behind walls. Different problem entirely. See leak detection.
What counts as an emergency
Water you cannot stop, water near electrics, or a leak coming through a ceiling are emergencies. A dripping tap is not, however annoying it is. If you can isolate the supply to the offending fitting, you can usually turn an emergency into a normal appointment and save yourself money.
Know where your stopcock is
The single most useful thing you can do before a plumbing emergency is find your internal stopcock and check it turns. They seize when they are never used. Ours is the first question we ask on an emergency call, and the answer decides how bad the next twenty minutes are.
Repair or replace
We will tell you when a repair is the sensible answer and when you are better replacing the fitting. On old mixers in particular, parts availability decides it more often than condition does.
