Most of the heating systems we power flush in Cambridge share a common story. Signs your Cambridge home needs residential power flushing services
Cold spots on radiators
Particularly cold at the bottom while the top is warm, classic sludge buildup stopping water circulation. The older steel radiators common in Cambridge’s period housing are particularly prone.
Boiler kettling or banging noises
Sounds like a kettle boiling. Caused by sludge restricting flow through the heat exchanger. Often the warning sign before complete boiler failure, and a good reason to book a boiler repair inspection alongside the flush itself.

How do I know if my Cambridge home needs power flushing services?
If radiators are cold at the bottom, the boiler makes strange noises, water comes out black when you bleed a radiator, or the system has never been flushed in 10+ years, you almost certainly need one. Will a chemical flush be enough instead of a full power flush?
Sometimes, if the system is newer than 10 years or has been recently cleaned. But for most of Cambridge’s older Victorian, Edwardian and inter-war heating systems, only a proper power flush actually shifts the sludge.

Cast iron is generally robust and handles flushing well. Older pressed steel radiators with existing weak spots can occasionally develop pinhole leaks during a flush, but those were close to failure regardless. We always warn upfront if a radiator looks suspect.
Do I need a power flush before a new boiler installation in Cambridge?
Almost always, yes, and most manufacturer warranties require it. Fitting a new boiler onto a sludged system is the fastest way to destroy a brand-new heat exchanger. We provide a chemical analysis report afterwards for warranty registration.
How often should the system be flushed?
With a magnetic filter fitted and annual servicing, a properly inhibited system shouldn’t need another full flush for 8 to 10 years. Without a filter, every 5 to 7 years is more realistic given Cambridge’s water hardness.
