Why heating systems in Hertford silt up faster
Two separate things go on inside a Hertford radiator, and they are worth telling apart because the fix differs.
The first is magnetite. Steel radiators corrode from the inside wherever oxygen gets into the system water, and the black iron oxide sludge that results is heavy. It settles in the bottom of radiators, in the pump, in the low points of the pipework and eventually in the heat exchanger. Oxygen gets in through an open vented tank in the loft, through failed or absent inhibitor, and through slow leaks that are constantly topped up.
The second is limescale. Affinity Water supplies the town from the chalk aquifer beneath east Hertfordshire, and the published district figures for SG13 and SG14 are roughly 331 to 332 ppm of calcium carbonate. Those are postcode level figures from a third party lookup rather than an Affinity zone reading for Hertford itself, but they put the town firmly in the very hard band. Fresh mains water entering the system brings dissolved calcium with it, and heating it deposits that calcium on the hottest surfaces.
Once filled and left alone, a sealed system picks up very little scale. Few systems are left alone. One with a slow leak topped up every month, or an old open vented system with a tank feeding it, takes in hard water constantly. That is the system that kettles.
Put sludge and scale together and you get the usual Hertford symptom list: cold spots, a boiler that bangs and rumbles, a house that takes an hour longer to warm, and a pump that fails every couple of years.

Black water when you bleed a radiator or drain a valve. The clearest single indicator there is.
Be honest with me: does my system actually need one?
Not every system does, and we will tell you when it does not. Selling a power flush to somebody who does not need one is one of the reasons this trade has the reputation it has.
A magnetic filter alone is sometimes enough. If your system is reasonably clean, has decent flow and simply has no protection fitted, a filter and the correct inhibitor dose will keep it that way. Short visit, small cost.
A chemical flush may be the right answer. Where there is some debris but no serious blockage, circulating a cleaner then draining and refilling with inhibitor is proportionate and cheaper.
A power flush is right where there is real sludge. High velocity flow, reversed through each circuit in turn, radiator by radiator, with a magnet in the flow to capture what comes out. That shifts material a chemical clean will only loosen.
And sometimes flushing will not save it. If radiators are perforated from the inside, or the pipework is blocked with hard deposit rather than loose sludge, flushing will not restore it. Replacing two radiators can be better value than flushing a system whose panels are already going.

What a power flush in Hertford actually involves
Most Hertford jobs run from about four hours to a full working day. Three storey houses and systems with a lot of radiators sit at the longer end.
We connect a flushing unit at the pump or across a radiator and circulate a cleaning chemical to break down the deposits. Then we run high velocity flow through the system, reversing the direction repeatedly, working through the radiators one at a time with the rest isolated so the full force goes where it is needed. Stubborn panels get agitated to shift the settled material off the base.
A magnet in the flow captures the magnetite as it comes out, and we keep flushing each circuit until the water runs clear. The system is then flushed through with fresh water until the discharge is clean and the pH is back where it should be.
Last, we dose the system with the correct volume of inhibitor and, where one is not already fitted, install a magnetic filter on the return to the boiler. A flush without inhibitor afterwards is money thrown away.
We also fix the cause where we can see it. A slow leak drawing in fresh hard water, or an open vented system pulling air over the vent pipe, will bring the sludge back.
Power flushing and your boiler warranty
If you are having a new boiler fitted, the system needs to be clean. Many manufacturers set out cleaning and inhibitor requirements in their installation instructions, and depending on the boiler and its terms a claim on a heat exchanger can be refused where debris from the old system is the cause.

The properties where the job gets more interesting
The railway era terraces off Ware Road, around Raynham Street and Hertford East. These streets went up after the station opened in 1888, and the heating in them is nearly always a retrofit onto a house built for open fires. Pipework has been threaded through solid walls and under suspended floors by several hands over several decades, often with dead legs from radiators that were removed and never capped. Sludge collects in those low points, so a flush has to be worked circuit by circuit rather than blasted through in one go.
Upper Bengeo, The Drive and the streets at the top of Port Hill. The ground rises steeply out of the Lea and Beane valley here, so these houses have real height between the ground floor and the loft. Where the system is still open vented with a feed and expansion tank up there, that height plus a badly sized or badly positioned vent pipe is a classic route for air to be pulled into the system water every time the pump runs. Air means corrosion, and corrosion means magnetite. We often suggest converting to a sealed system at the same time as the flush, because otherwise you are cleaning a system that will make more sludge.
Sele Farm and the eastern estates. Mixed social and private housing with a wide spread of system ages. In one street we might flush a system that has never been touched and, three doors down, find a sealed system with a filter already fitted that needs nothing more than inhibitor. Calton Court, the flexicare scheme that opened there in March 2013, is a reminder that not everything on an older estate is old. We test rather than assume.
Microbore systems. Wherever a Hertford house was heated or reheated in the 1970s and 1980s, there is a good chance of 8mm or 10mm microbore running to the radiators. It has less than half the cross sectional area of 15mm, so it blocks far sooner and needs more care to clear. We flush it at controlled pressure, circuit by circuit, and on a heavily silted microbore system the result is often an improvement rather than a transformation.
Larger houses out at Hertford Heath, Brickendon and Bayford. Long pipe runs, more radiators and often a cylinder circuit as well. Bigger systems hold more water and more sludge, and take longer to clean properly.
