Q: Is a Worcester EA 227 fault dangerous?

The lockout is the boiler protecting you, it has shut the gas off rather than continue. The danger is in working around it with repeated resets.

If your Worcester Bosch boiler is showing EA, or 227, or both together, the boiler has locked out and shut off the gas. It is one of the most common Worcester lockouts and the first checks are free.

Check your gas supply first, and know when to stop

One of Worcester’s own published meanings for EA is no gas supply or low gas supply pressure. So before anything else: does your gas hob light? If it does not, the problem is your gas supply, not your boiler.

What Worcester Bosch actually says about EA

Here is something you will not find on any other page about this fault. Worcester publishes two different meanings for EA, depending on which range your boiler is from.

In Worcester’s Engineer’s Service Booklet, EA is given as “During operation: flame not detected”, the boiler tried to run and could not confirm a flame.
In the Greenstar i System ErP user manual, EA is given as “No gas supply / low gas supply pressure”, with the remedy “contact your gas supplier”.

Both are Worcester’s own wording. They are not contradictory so much as two ends of the same problem: the boiler cannot establish a flame, and a missing or weak gas supply is one of the reasons why. But which one your manual gives changes where you should start, and if you own a Greenstar i System the manufacturer is telling you to look at the gas supply before the boiler.

Where 227 fits in

227 is the code displayed alongside EA on affected Worcester appliances, which is why so many people search for “EA 227” as a pair. If your display is cycling between the two, or showing them together, you are looking at one fault, not two.

We are not going to give you a separate definition for 227, because Worcester does not publish one in the literature we can cite, and inventing one would send you looking at the wrong component. Treat it as part of the same EA lockout and work through the checks below.

What to check yourself

Do your other gas appliances work? If the hob will not light, it is the gas supply. Contact your supplier.
Check prepayment meter credit if you have one. This is the single most common cause and it costs nothing to rule out.
Check the gas isolation valve near the boiler is fully open, the lever should run in line with the pipe, not across it.
Check the condensate pipe if it is cold outside. A frozen condensate pipe locks Worcester boilers out and thaws with warm water.
Check the pressure gauge reads between 1 and 1.5 bar with the heating off.
Reset the boiler. Two or three attempts at most.

Why two or three resets and no more

A boiler that locks out on a flame fault has closed the gas valve deliberately. Each reset asks it to send gas to a burner that may not light. Two or three attempts is a reasonable test. Sitting there resetting it twenty times is not, and it will not fix anything that the third attempt did not.

What causes an EA 227 lockout beyond the free checks

Ignition electrodes worn, dirty or out of position, a wear item and a common answer
Flame sensing electrode dirty or failing, so the boiler lights but cannot confirm it
Gas valve not opening correctly or delivering the wrong rate
Low incoming gas pressure, which needs measuring rather than guessing at
Blocked or restricted flue
Printed circuit board fault, usually diagnosed last

All of these are Gas Safe registered work. Not as a formality: they involve the gas carrying components of a live appliance.

If EA 227 keeps coming back

A lockout that clears on reset and returns is a degrading fault, not a random one. Electrodes are the usual answer and replacing them is a modest job. Left alone, the gaps between lockouts shorten until the boiler stops clearing at all, and that tends to happen in the coldest week of the year.
