Some residential air to air heat pump installations qualify for 0% VAT as an energy saving material under HMRC VAT Notice 708/6, and that relief is due to run to 31 March 2027. It depends on the system, the property and how the work is carried out, so we confirm whether your job qualifies before we quote and show the VAT position clearly on the quotation.
Vantage Plumbing and Heating covers Stotfold and the surrounding SG5 villages from Stevenage. Refrigerant handled under F-Gas requirements, a 2 year guarantee on our workmanship, and the same 24/7 line that covers our plumbing and heating work.
Stotfold is not an old town with a thin layer of new houses on the edge. It is an old village core with very large modern estates built around it over the last twenty five years, which decides which rooms get unbearable in summer.
Modern, well sealed, well insulated houses hold heat. That is the point of them in winter and the problem in July. Add a south facing elevation, large format glazing, a room in the roof or a glazed rear extension, and you have a space that gains heat all day and cannot lose it after dark. Opening a window at eleven at night near the Ivel does not help much, because the still air in the valley bottom does not shift.
The old cottages in the core have the opposite problem: solid walls with real thermal mass, small windows, and rooms that stay tolerable in summer but are difficult and expensive to alter. Different building, different answer.
So the starting point is which room, which orientation, and what the fabric is. We do not quote air conditioning off a floor area.
Wall mounted split systems. A single indoor unit served by its own condenser outside. The right answer for a bedroom that will not cool down, a home office in a converted garage, or a loft conversion.
Multi split systems. Several indoor units running off one condenser. This is what most Stotfold detached houses end up with, because it means one outdoor unit and one set of pipework penetrations rather than three of each. It matters even more on estates where the outdoor unit has to sit somewhere the neighbours will not object to.
Ducted systems. Indoor unit hidden in a loft or a bulkhead, air delivered through grilles. More building work, much less visible, and the usual choice where the room finish matters or where several small rooms are served from one unit.
We fit Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Samsung, LG and Fujitsu. The right one depends on the room, the capacity needed and the indoor unit style that suits the space, and it is named on the quotation.
Heating with the same box. Worth taking seriously here. A split system running in heating mode is efficient enough to be a genuine supplementary heat source, and it is particularly useful in the rooms your wet heating system was never sized for: a garden room, a loft conversion added after the boiler was specified, or a rear extension on an existing radiator circuit that has been cold since it was built.
This is where national installers get Stotfold wrong, so it is worth being precise.
Central Bedfordshire Council is the planning authority for Stotfold, not a Hertfordshire council. Stotfold sits in Central Bedfordshire despite its Hitchin postal address and SG5 postcode.
Stotfold has no conservation area of its own. That is unusual for a town with this much history, and it is genuinely helpful for air conditioning, because conservation area status is one of the main triggers for needing consent for an outdoor unit. The neighbouring hamlet of Astwick, in the same postcode area and a couple of minutes up the road, does have its own conservation area. So a property in Astwick and a property in Stotfold can face completely different consent positions for the same installation.
For most Stotfold houses an outdoor unit is permitted development under the current rules. The conditions are that it is sited to have as little effect as possible on the appearance of the building and the amenity of the area, that it stays off a wall or roof fronting a highway above the ground storey, that it stays off a pitched roof, that it is inside the volume limit, that it meets the noise standard assessed at the neighbouring window, and that it comes off when it is no longer used. That noise assessment is the reason siting matters: a unit tucked out of sight against a fence can be exactly the position that causes a problem.
Listed buildings are a separate question entirely, and Stotfold has 18 of them: the Grade II star Church of St Mary the Virgin, and Grade II entries including Stotfold Mill, Mill House and Mill Cottage, Stotfold Bury, The Grange, The Old Vicarage, The Chequers, School House and the war memorial. On a listed building, listed building consent is generally required for external plant and for the fabric alterations that go with it, regardless of the absence of a conservation area. We tell you that at survey rather than after the pipework is in.
The converted hospital apartments at Fairfield Park have their own layer on top: external alterations to a converted historic building usually involve the management company as well as the planners, and an outdoor unit position that suits your flat may not be acceptable to the block.
Elm House and the newer apartments on Arlesey Road. Built with underfloor heating and air source heat pumps, so the property already has a heat pump outdoor unit and a designed position for it. Adding air conditioning is a coordination job: external space, electrical capacity, condensate routing and how the two systems behave with both running. Doable, but not a standard survey.
Stotfold Park, off Taylors Road. David Wilson Homes, 2020s, now sold out, with countryside views and the large glazing that goes with marketing a view. Rooms in the roof and south facing first floor bedrooms are the recurring complaint. On houses this new the priority is a pipe route that does not butcher a nearly new elevation, so we plan the run before the unit.
Randall Fields, off Arlesey Road. Recent Cala Homes detached and semi detached stock. Plot spacing on modern estates is tight, which makes outdoor unit siting and noise at the boundary the first thing we look at, not the last. On a semi detached plot the wall you would naturally use is often the shared one.
Fairfield Park houses. Early 2000s, Victorian inspired styling, around 900 dwellings. The estate reads as period from the street but the construction is modern, so cavity penetrations and internal routes are straightforward. The constraint here is aesthetic and neighbourly rather than structural, and a well chosen unit position at the rear usually solves it.
The old core, Queen Street, Brook Street and around Stotfold Common. Solid wall cottages, irregular room shapes, and often no discreet external wall to work with at all. Where a unit cannot be sited acceptably, we will say so rather than sell you a compromise you will regret every time you sit in the garden.
Every cooling system produces water. An indoor unit can generate a surprising volume of condensate on a humid August day, and the whole thing has to go somewhere with a reliable fall.
Getting that wrong is the most common cause of an air conditioning system damaging a house. A line run with a sag in it, terminated into an unsuitable waste, or fitted with a pump nobody can service, is a ceiling stain waiting to happen. We plan the route as part of the design, use a proper fall wherever gravity will do the work, and use a pump only where it is the only option.
Outdoor units also produce water when running in heating mode during defrost cycles, which matters where a unit sits over a path or a driveway in a Stotfold winter and the discharge turns into ice.
Fit air conditioning in a home and HMRC currently treats it as an energy saving material, zero rated for VAT under Notice 708/6. That relief runs to 31 March 2027.
It covers supply and installation together on residential work, which is one reason households now treat air to air heat pumps as a heating decision rather than only a summer purchase.
We quote per property after a survey. A single wall mounted split in an accessible room is at the lower end. A multi split serving three or four rooms in a detached house at Stotfold Park is considerably more, and a ducted install with loft work more again.
The variables that move the price are the number of indoor units, the pipe run length, how difficult the outdoor unit position is, the electrical supply, and whether any making good is needed. We show those as separate items so you can see what you are paying for. Electrical work is carried out by qualified electricians and certificated as part of the job.
Refrigerant handling is regulated work. Systems are installed, charged and commissioned under F-Gas requirements, pressure tested and vacuumed properly before charging, and left with documentation rather than a verbal assurance.
After that, air conditioning needs servicing like anything else: filters, coil cleaning, condensate checks and a refrigerant charge check. Many manufacturers make that annual service a condition of the equipment warranty, depending on the system and its terms. Systems that never get serviced lose efficiency quietly and then fail in the first hot week of the year, which is the worst possible time to be waiting for a part.
The rooms people ask us to cool in this town are usually the rooms the heating never covered properly: the extension on the end of an existing radiator circuit, the loft conversion added long after the boiler was sized. Those are heating questions as much as cooling ones, and it is worth having both looked at in the same visit. Boiler installation, general plumbing, power flushing and drainage are all covered across SG5.

Usually not. Stotfold has no conservation area of its own, so a domestic outdoor unit will normally sit within permitted development provided the siting, size and noise conditions are met. We check the specific address with Central Bedfordshire Council at survey before we quote.
Astwick has its own conservation area, so the position there is different and consent is far more likely to be needed. Same postcode area, different answer.
Often, but listed building consent is generally required for external plant on a listed building. Stotfold has 18 listed buildings and we check yours specifically rather than assuming.
Yes. A split system is an air to air heat pump and runs in heating mode efficiently. It is a good fit for loft conversions and extensions that the existing radiator circuit never really covered.
Yes, on residential supply and install as an energy saving material under HMRC VAT Notice 708/6, currently running to 31 March 2027.
Modern units are quiet, but plot spacing on recent estates is tight, so we survey the boundary position rather than putting the unit wherever the pipe run is shortest.
